January 3, 2021
Since 2014 I’d picked a word of the year and yearly themes for myself to work on. The first was Joy after spending so much of 2013 in a dark perinatal depression fog where no joy could penetrate through. Subsequent years brought themes of bloom, balance, believe, persevere, and intentional.
Last year was the first year we decided to make a family theme and chose Dig Deep. Turned out more fitting than we imagined it could be, even though we didn’t dig deep in the ways we’d fully planned.
And then it came time to plan for 2021. I was stuck. We were stuck. What did 2020 show us about ourselves that we wanted to work on? That’s when we honed in. In 2021 we want to
1. Dig Deep…only this time on purpose and with better plans, not just reacting to the chaos of 2020 and trying to stay afloat.
2. Count it All Joy: James 1:2. We don’t expect 2021 to magically be better than 2020. We cannot change the chaos, but we can change our approach to it and what we radiate back into the world. We want to count our joys instead of tallying up our afflictions. We need to count the hard times, the good times, the down-right bad times, the scary times, the amazing times…and we needed to learn to count it ALL joy. That was almost our theme for the year, but it just didn’t feel all the way there yet.
3. Let God Prevail. President Russell M Nelson learned in his studies that another translation for Israel is “Let God Prevail”. As we are to build Israel, gather Israel, and be of the house of Israel, we are to let God prevail. We want to let God prevail in our home with how it feels. We want to let God prevail in our actions with and to others. We want to let God prevail in our business decisions. And we want to let God prevail in our life in every way.
So how do you combine those into one word, on theme for the year?
Hallelujah!
“Praise God, all ye people!” It’s a celebration, it’s an invitation, it’s a declaration of allegiance and faith, it’s a resolve to follow, and it’s an exuberant cry of victory amid both trials and triumphs.
2020 is done. 2021 has begun. Hallelujah!
