Style & Posing, Tips for Finding the best Photographer for You!

I know…when it comes to choosing a photographer you have a plethora of options. In town photographers, out of town photographers, newbies, seasoned pros, natural light shooters, studio shooters, etc. Does it really matter who you choose as long as the price is right? I think it does!

I’ve written this series to walk you though how to find the best photographer for you! (Links to the rest of the series are at the bottom of this post!)

Know what type of photos you are drawn to

Every photographer has their own style.

Some love color and lots of energy. Others love a more earthy look to their work. Some are dark and moody. Some are light and airy. No style is right, no style is wrong. We just each have a style that speaks to the artist in us.

If you are really drawn to the dark and moody style of photos, hiring a bright and colorful photographer isn’t going to serve you well. They can’t just “slap a filter on it” to get a different look.

Marquette LaRee: My style is light and joyful. Playful almost. I love playing with light and highlighting natural colors. I love the subjects to immediately pop and be the highlight of the image.

Every photographer has their own approach to posing.

There is the traditional posing where you sit still and look at the camera. There is completely candid posing that falls more under the documentary umbrella (the photographer gives little to no prompts and just documents what happens). Serious posing. Playful posing. Now of course you can have multiple types of poses in a session, but if a photographer does predominantly studio style posing and you want run-around-the-field-candids, you two might not be the best fit.

Marquette LaRee: One of my biggest goals is for my clients to feel comfortable and to enjoy the experience being in front of the camera. The biggest compliment I get from Dads and Grooms is “Wow! This was actually fun! I was kinda dreading this!” I accomplish that through playful posing, bouncing between having clients interact and having them do static look at the camera poses. Finding the natural ways clients interact so that true personalities shine through in the photos is my mission for every session!
