“What do we wear?!” That’s one of the most frequent questions I get asked by clients as they plan their session. Let’s dive in with my top 10 tips for what to wear at your engagement session.

  1. Think about your feet. You’re going to be walking around for an hour and a half, so ladies…if you’re one to last 5 minutes with heels on, please don’t torture your poor feet for 90 minutes; you’ll really just end up being miserable.Just like the outfit choice, make sure your shoes are something you’re comfortable in. There’s definitely a whole lot of cute non-high heel shoes out there!
  2. Consider the location. Be aware of what your surroundings are going to be and try not to clash (or overly match). If your engagement session is in a forest, you probably don’t want to wear forest green as you’ll blend in, or a hawaiian shirt as you’ll look out of place.
  3. Complement each other….don’t match! Gone are the days where the whole family goes to the beach wearing the same white shirt for their family portraits. That also means matching each other for your couple’s session is a big no. Coordinating is the best way to go (think color palette, not one single color).
  4. Show your true colors and don’t be afraid to be bold. If you really love your cobalt blue dress, wear it! Wear colors that look good on you, even if they are more bold. I suggest you don’t both wear bright red, but one of you can.
  5. Dress the same scale. If your fiancé is wearing a suit and you’re wearing jeans and a tank, then you’re not going to look like you go together! Dress at the same level.
  6. Bring options. Having a dressier option and a more casual option gives you so much variety and fun vibes to your session. It shows multiple aspects of your personality and gives you more options when it comes to picking which photos to print!
  7. Dress for the weather and have a backup plan. This one seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised. If the weather will be cold, bring a coordinating jacket, cardigan, or at least a blanket to warm up in periodically. In contrast…long sleeves and a puffy vest are cute forest vibes, but they are brutal in these AZ summers.
  8. Don’t be afraid of patterns. My main tip here is for any pattern to be larger than a dime, otherwise it renders weird on camera and I can’t edit it out.
  9. Add layers. Scarves, multiple clothing layers, jewelry, hats, vests, etc. They all can really liven up pictures and if you’re afraid of going too bold with colors maybe just add it in as an accent – something you can take on and off! This also helps with interesting weather situations and can help people feel more confident.
  10. Ladies, I recommend that you wear something that flatters the parts of you that you love the most and also allows you to be extremely confident! If you are uncomfortable when you look in the mirror (having to suck in and only like the way you look from one angle), then that probably isn’t the best outfit choice for you. The more confident you are in your outfit, the more you will love your portraits not only for the way they look, but because you remember how you felt when you look at the photos.

BONUS TIP: Be yourself. The worst thing would be looking at your pictures and looking unrecognizable because you dressed up too much! (If you’re not one to dress up often! Also, be sure to wear things that flatter your body type! At this point in your life you probably know what those are! =)
